ACCESS:  6 km from Paparoa on SH 12, turn right into Sterling Road.  1.7km down Sterling Road, the walk is signposted on the left by a small parking bay.

The track is even with a slight gradient.  It performs a loop through the forest. At the entrance to the track is a log hauler, used to transport logs carried by teams of bullocks on primitive bush roads.
The reserve was purchased in 1954 as a memorial to the pre-First World War kauri bushmen.  Although the industry is remembered as one of destruction and flagrant demolition of a majestic species of tree (the kauri), it was also a time of high human endeavour.  Bushmen living in harsh conditions and in rugged country developed kinship and camaraderie, not to mention an affection for their environment (despite it’s plunder).
Observe forested ridges as you pass through an area of former kauri forest.  There will often be a solitary large tree still occupying the ridge, left by the bushmen for the continuation of the species.
The dense stand of kauri on the hilltop has a regenerating understory of kohekohe, red matipo  and a carpet of hound’s tongue fern. More Info Here

The walkway, starts beside SH12 in the Paparoa township with an easy first stage across private land to the foot of the Pa site (20 minutes).
From here the walk crosses a second bridge entering the main bush aera. The track climbs with a moderate grade up to the Pa site (another 20 minutes).
There is a loop track , or you can venture further to the boardwalk through the mangroves onto Pahi Road (15 minutes) and return along Pahi Road before joining Paparoa Valley Road back to the car park (30 minutes).

In 2015, local artists banded together and opened WHITE ROCK GALLERY to present to the public a wide variety of creative mediums from paintings, sculpture and jewellery, through to quilting and other fabric based crafts.  High standards have been set from the outset and all paintings on display are exhibited for a maximum of eight weeks to ensure a continuing interest in the gallery.  All works are for sale and the creators are happy to accept suitable private commissions.  If you are looking for a quality gift or a permanent memento of your stay in the Kaipara, then don’t miss a visit to White Rock Gallery.

Staffed by member artists and ‘friends of the gallery’ this facility is now located 5 Church Road, Matakohe, next door to the Kauri Museum. Open hours are 10am through to 4pm seven days a week except for Christmas Day and the morning of Anzac Day (April 25th).
